Student Column: 2022 Olympics

Following a long couple weeks of excitement, success, and some scandal, the 2022 Winter Olympics, which took place this year in Beijing, China, concluded on February 20th.

Leading the way in terms of the medal count was Norway with an impressive 16 gold medals, 8 silver, and 13 bronze. Following behind them was Germany in second, China in third, and the United States in fourth place, finishing with 8 gold, 10 silver, and 7 bronze.

American snowboarder Chloe Kim made history this year by becoming the first woman to ever win back-to-back gold medals in halfpipe snowboarding. The United States also found success in men’s slopestyle, 500 meter speed skating, and mixed team aerials, among other events.

This year’s Winter Olympics arrived under unusual circumstances considering that the Summer Olympics in Tokyo took place just some months earlier due to it being moved to account for the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the presence of the disease, proper precautions and other safety measures ensured an enjoyable few weeks of competition among the world’s best winter athletes.
