Valentine's Day is known for celebrating love, affection, and friendship. It’s celebrated annually on February 14th. But Valentine's Day has a deeper history than you’d think! 

History of Valentine’s Day

The origins of Valentine's Day are rooted in both legend and history It's commonly associated with Saint Valentine. This man was a Christian priest who ministered to persecuted Christian’s during the Roman Empire. There are many stories about Saint Valentine but the most popular one is about Saint Valentine secretly performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry under Emperor Claudius II rule.  Another story suggests that he helped persecuted Christians and was executed for his defiance. 

Modern Traditions and Celebrations

Modern Day traditions for Valentine's Day can vary! Some of the most popular traditions include:

  • Exchanging cards and letters

    : Lots of couples and friends will exchange cards and letters to express one's feeling to another person. It can either be romantic or completely platonic. Cards can be hand-made or store bought! But hand-made cards are quite special.

  • Giving Gifts

    : On Valentine's Day you’ll usually see people exchanging gifts such as: Teddy bears, chocolate, roses, flowers, etc..

  • Romantic Dinner

    (Dates in general): Couples or friends will sometimes go out for dinner or just out to hang out. Dinners can be homemade too!

  • Acts of Kindness

    : Families and friends will usually show kindness and give small gestures on Valentine’s Day!

Valentine's Day is usually focused on romantic relationships, but it also has become a time to celebrate different kinds of love. Many people use this Holiday to appreciate friendships and loved ones. Schools will even sometimes have students create Valentine boxes and exchange small cards and candy with each other.
