Arnold Bocklin

Welcome back to Visionary Spotlight. Today’s artist of choice is Arnold Böcklin. Böcklin painted many canvases with inspiration from ancient mythology. He was born in Switzerland in 1827 to his parents, Ursula and Christian. He had a total of fourteen children with Rosa Pascucci. When he was growing up he went to Düsseldorf Academy. He was taught by Schirmer, who sent him to many different places to paint so he could show his true potential. The most known place he worked during this time was the Louvre, where he painted landscapes. Soon after this, he went to Rome to serve in the military. When he returned, he had a lot of insight into Rome’s beauty and more knowledge of mythology which led to his art pieces, titled: “ Odysseus and Calypso” and “The Sanctuary of Hercules” and many others. Arnold also did multiple self-portraits, which are incredibly well done. One place you can find his work is the Kunstmuseum Basel. Thanks for letting Arnold share the Spotlight!
