Martin Luther King Jr. is a very well known figure in US history who lived from 1929 to 1968. MLK dedicated his life to fighting against inequality and discrimination in a nonviolent way. As a civil rights activist, MLK has inspired millions of people and has had many accomplishments and successes.
One highlight in MLK’s career was his contribution in the Montgomery Bus Boycott that happened when Rosa Parks, another civil rights activist, refused to give up her seat. He led the Montgomery Improvement Association, which is the association that led the boycott.
Another success in MLK’s career was his legendary “I Have a Dream” speech. This speech is a heartfelt and passionate statement about racial equality that urges the US to live up to the statement “all men are created equal.” This speech also took a large role in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights act of 1965.
Martin Luther King Jr. was unfortunately assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. We spend the third Monday of January to have a day to celebrate all of MLK’s accomplishments. Although MLK was assassinated 56 years ago, his legacy continues to live on.
