BizTown

Ms. Loy, our school counselor, is teaching our 5th and 6th  grade students  skills through BizTown that will prepare them for the workforce.  BizTown combines in-class learning with a day-long visit to a simulated town. This learning experience allows students to operate banks, manage restaurants, write checks, vote for mayor, and much more. Students are able to connect the dots between what they learn in school and the real world.  So far, the 5th and 6th grade students at EJES have learned about the economy and communities in their first unit and they are now currently on their second unit learning about financial literacy.  In the financial literacy unit, the students have learned about banks and other financial services, checking accounts, deposits, how to write a check, and how to keep a check register.  We are getting closer to our third unit that will include learning about interests and skills, how to fill out a job application/how to apply for a job, how to interview for a job, and electing students to mayor and district attorney.  We already started the process of voting, with the first round of voting for Mayor taking place in each homeroom.

The winners for each homeroom are:

Mrs. Fowler: Riley Milliken
Mrs. Lauver: Matthew Corman
Mr. Feltman: Aubrey Fogle
Mrs. Hoffman: Elysia Lopez
Mrs. Geedy: Cooper Arnold
Mr. Frontz: Rivers Snyder

The next round of voting will take place right before Christmas break.  For that election, the students will be voting on their grade’s homeroom candidates to pick a student to represent their grade in the general election.  That will also be the time that students will get to vote on a student from their grade that they would like to be district attorney.  Once we have it narrowed down to two candidates (one from 5th and one from 6th), then we will have a general election to vote for a winner of mayor and district attorney, which will take place in January.
