Public education is a cornerstone of a thriving society, with nine out of every ten students in the United States attending public schools. Access to high-quality public education is crucial for our children’s success, and it takes a team of dedicated people – teachers, administrators, staff, parents and other community members – to provide that education.
The nine members of your local school board are a key part of this team, making informed decisions that shape our schools. School board directors are elected to govern and make informed decisions on behalf of our public schools, for the benefit of our students and communities.
In honor of school board directors’ time and dedication all year long, January is designated School Director Recognition Month. As public servants, school directors devote, on average, ten hours each month to board business. From voting on budgets to adopting policy to conducting comprehensive planning, school boards are fueling innovation and fostering brighter futures for our schools and our students. Board service is unpaid, and school directors are often motivated to pursue the role out of a desire to benefit their community and to give back or to improve educational outcomes for students.
About 41% of school directors serve the district they once attended as a student and almost all are parents of students who attend or attended the district they serve. They are our neighbors, co-workers, fellow parents and friends.
When our public schools are strong, our whole community is strengthened. This month, recognize your school directors for their commitment and effort. Support these public servants by showing your appreciation for all they do to help our students and schools succeed.
